Business Facts and Figures

Do you want to open a business downtown, in the heart of Steamboat Springs?  Businesses cover the entire spectrum, from restaurants and retails shops, to professional offices including but not limited to lawyers, medical professionals, accountants, and architects, to all kinds of services.  There is a whole wellness niche including fitness studios, yoga practitioners, physical therapists and dance studios.  And there is room for you, too.

No matter what business you would like to start, there are several hoops you will have to jump through to get the business open.  Although Steamboat Springs and Routt County don’t require business licenses, if you sell any kind of product to the public, you will be required to have a City of Steamboat Springs sales tax license, as well as ones for the State of Colorado and Routt County.  If you are planning to open a food service operation, you will also have to contact Routt County Environmental Health (the health department).

If you are not a seasoned entrepreneur, the Yampa Valley Entrepreneurship Center at Colorado Mountain College can help you lay out a business plan for success and mentor you. This is a great place to test your idea, learn the basics of what will be required and has ongoing training once you are in business.  Call to ask about the First Steps, Next Steps and Success Steps workshops they hold several times a year.

Many of the realtors in Steamboat Springs specialize in commercial properties.  They can help you find the right location or business to either purchase or lease.  Share your vision and they should be able to help you.

The Steamboat Springs Economic Development Council has created and maintains a very thorough website on doing business within the Yampa Valley.  Here you will find data and business resources to help answer questions.

There are two organizations that will also help your business succeed.  Main Street Steamboat Springs is dedicated solely to the businesses and the district of downtown Steamboat Springs.  The program director is intimately familiar with the types of businesses, buildings, resources and business inventory located downtown and can also let you know what markets are saturated or underserved.   Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association (Chamber of Commerce) encompasses the entire business and lodging communities of Steamboat Springs.  Membership in both organizations is strongly suggested.
