Steamboat Springs is known as both Ski Town USA and Bike Town USA for dual reasons. The ski mountain, Mt Werner, offers 165 trails on 2,965 acres of terrain and receives an average of 359 inches of Champagne Powder each year. The ski mountain offers varying terrain to appeal to all skier types, including terrain parks, guided naturalist tours and ski school for the kids.

The Winter Carnival, hosted by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, is the highlight of the winter season for downtown. The city streets are filled with snow and a weekend of events provides a great time for everyone in the family. There are children downhill slalom races at Howelsen Hill, horse-drawn ski jumps, parades and the infamous Lighted Man.  The town truly comes alive for this event due to its rich history that has outdone itself year after year for over a century. Originally started to chase away the winter blues, it is now a showcase of our local athletes and their many talents. The event is full of excitement- skiers jumping through fiery hoops, the fireworks exploding off the lighted man and the explosion of the world’s biggest firework at the very end every year.

In Bike Town USA, you will find three different trail systems that run throughout town. Howelsen Hill allows access to bikers year round with a newly groomed and designed fat bike trail system on the backside of the mountain, leaving the front side open to skiers. Howelsen offers over 24 miles of non-motorized trails in the summer to the area’s mountain bikers. The Howelsen base area is a mecca for summertime fun with pickleball courts, tennis courts and diamonds for baseball, kickball, softball and the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo grounds house weekly events throughout the summer.

The Yampa River provides many different avenues for recreation throughout the year. Fishermen have access year round but in the spring, rafters itch to be the first ones with their boats on the water to take advantage of the spring runoff. Most locals would agree, the best way to spend a summer day is floating in a tube downstream to meet your friends downtown for happy hour.
